JA 7B Science Schedule for Jan 30th - Feb 3rd

This week we will focus mostly on ch-2, The World of Earth Science. Students will learn about the branches of Earth Science, the fields of geology, oceanography, meteorology, astronomy, environmental science, ecology, and careers available in Earth Science. Then, students will explore scientific methods and follow David Gillette’s discovery of Seismosaurus. Students will also learn about the importance of models in science. They will learn about physical, mathematical, and conceptual models. The chapter concludes with a discussion of measurement and safety.

Academy Geometry Schedule for Jan 30th - Feb 3rd

This week in Geometry, we will discuss about the coordinate plane, perimeter, circumference, and area of various geometrical figures. Students will learn to find the distance between two points in the coordinate plane, the coordinates of the midpoint of a segment in the coordinate plane, to find perimeters of rectangles and squares, and circumferences of circles, and to find areas of rectangles, squares, and circles. Students will take a test on ch-1, Tools of Geometry. Later in the week, we will move on to ch-2, Reasoning and Proof. Students will have homework every night.

This week we will discuss ch-3, Models of the Earth. Students will learn to find locations on Earth, mapping Earth’s surface, and the various types of maps. Students’ will learn how latitude and longitude, Earth’s magnetism, and the Global Positioning System are used to find locations on Earth. We will also discuss how cartographers obtain information to create maps, describe map projections, and explains how to use a compass rose, a legend, and scales. Students should take notes on all three sections and do the section reviews for homework.

Wednesday: Discussion on sec-7.3, Balancing Chemical Equations. The main objective of this topic is to learn to write a balanced equation for a chemical reaction. Students should get familiar with the rules to write and balance equations. Next, we will work on balancing various types of equations.

Thursday: We will work on several problems and practice writing the equations and balancing them. Students will work in groups to sharpen their balancing skills.

Monday: Students will learn to calculate the molar mass of various compounds. They will also learn to calculate mass from moles for complex compounds. Next, they will apply their application skills on solving variety of problems.

Tuesday: Isopentyl acetate is the compound responsible for the scent of bananas. Interestingly, bees release about 1 mg of this compound whey they sting. This attracts other bees, which then join the attack. Students will learn to calculate the number of isopentyl acetate molecules released in a typical sting bite. Next, we will focus on calculating the percent composition of compounds and mass percent. Students will work on several problems during class. Do the section review for homework.

Wednesday: Discussion on sec-6.3, Formulas of Compounds. Students will learn to calculate the empirical formula and the molecular formula for various compounds. They will study the tools to determine the empirical formula of a compound. Today our focus will be on calculating the empirical formulas for binary compounds.

Thursday: We will learn to calculate empirical formulas for compounds containing three or more elements and from percent composition. Students will work on several problems to get more practice.

Friday: Students will learn to calculate the molecular formulas for various compounds. They will work on various problems and then move on to the sec-6.3 section review.

Monday: Students will be assigned with a chapter project - Design and build an earthquake-safe house. Students will have 2 weeks to work on it. This project will be due on Monday, April 12th and is worth 200 points. Next we will discuss sec-1, Forces in Earth's crust. Students will learn about types of stress that changes the Earth's surface, kinds of faults, and the land features that result from the forces of plate movement. Tuesday: Discussion on sec-2, Earthquakes and Seismic waves. Students will learn about types of seismic waves, measuring earthquakes using the Mercalli scale, the Richter scale, and the moment magnitude scale. Next we will learn to compare the magnitude of various earthquakes and how to locate the epicenter. Do the notes and section assessment for homework.

Wednesday: Today students will work on two fun activities during class. First they will work on a skills lab - Finding the epicenter. Next, they will work on a news report - each student should pretend to be a television news reporter covering an earthquake rated between IV and V on the Mercalli scale and write a short news story describing the earthquake's effects.

Thursday: Discussion on sec-3, Monitoring Earthquakes. Students will learn how seismographs work, how geologists monitor faults using tilt meters, creep meters, GPS satellites, and how to use seismographic data. Next they will work on their notes/section assessment and finish it for homework.

Students will learn about the Sun’s interior, the core, the radiation zone, the convection zone, the Sun’s atmosphere, the photosphere, the chromosphere, the corona, features of the Sun – sunspots, prominences, solar flares, and solar wind. Wednesday: Today students will work on making a “Travel Brochure”. They have to select one of the inner planets other than Earth.
