JA 7A Science Schedule for Oct 18th - 22nd

Most of the student's did well on their E2020 science courses last week. However, we have many students who are not meeting their weekly target. There is a tool on your organizer that will help you be on track. When you login and click on the organizer you will see few icons on the bottom of the page. Then do the following:

1. When you click on the reports button, you have access to many different types of reports. To view any of these reports in detail simply click on the corresponding button.

2. When you click on assignments calendar it shows you what assignments you have completed (in green text), what assignments you should have completed and future assignments (in grey text), and what assignments you should be working on today (in blue text). It also shows the percent complete for the course after each assignment is completed.

JA 7A SCIENCE: This group should have completed the first unit - The Scientific Process and the topic test on it. Students who did not finish it should work on it over the weekend.

This week students should work on the following:
The second unit Evaluating explanations, should take the topic test and then move on to the third unit Earth's History.

NOTE: If a student is not meeting his/her daily target, they are responsible to work on it at home or stay after school.

JA 7B Science Schedule for Mar 29th - Apr 2nd

Monday: Students will be assigned with a chapter project - Design and build an earthquake-safe house. Students will have 2 weeks to work on it. This project will be due on Monday, April 12th and is worth 200 points. Next we will discuss sec-1, Forces in Earth's crust. Students will learn about types of stress that changes the Earth's surface, kinds of faults, and the land features that result from the forces of plate movement. Do the notes and section assessment for homework.

Tuesday: Discussion on sec-2, Earthquakes and Seismic waves. Students will learn about types of seismic waves, measuring earthquakes using the Mercalli scale, the Richter scale, and the moment magnitude scale. Next we will learn to compare the magnitude of various earthquakes and how to locate the epicenter. Do the notes and section assessment for homework.

Wednesday: Today students will work on two fun activities during class. First they will work on a skills lab - Finding the epicenter. Next, they will work on a news report - each student should pretend to be a television news reporter covering an earthquake rated between IV and V on the Mercalli scale and write a short news story describing the earthquake's effects.

Thursday: Discussion on sec-3, Monitoring Earthquakes. Students will learn how seismographs work, how geologists monitor faults using tilt meters, creep meters, GPS satellites, and how to use seismographic data. Next they will work on their notes/section assessment and finish it for homework.

Friday: Discussion on sec-4, Earthquake safety. Students will learn how geologists determine earthquake risk, the types of damage an earthquake can cause, what can be done to increase earthquake safety and reduce earthquake damage. Do the notes and section assessment for homework.

Physics Schedule for Mar 29th - Apr 2nd

Monday: Today we will discuss sec-5.2, Energy. Students will learn to identify several forms of energy, calculate kinetic energy for an object, apply the work-kinetic energy theorem to solve problems, and distinguish between kinetic and potential energy. Do the section review for homework.
Tuesday: Students will work on the practice problems B for part of the class period. Next they will work in groups to finish their "Creating Robots" project.
Wednesday: Today students will work on practice problems C and D for part of the class period. Next we will discuss sec-5.3, Conservation of Energy. Students will identify situations in which conservation of mechanical energy is valid, recognize the forms that conserved energy can take, and solve problems using conservation of mechanical energy.
Thursday: Students will work on practice problems E and then finish their section-5.3 section review. Next they will continue to work on the Robots project.
Friday: Discussion on sec-5.4, Power. Students will relate the concepts of energy, time, and power; calculate power into two different ways, and explain the effect of machines on work and power.

Earth Science Schedule for Mar 29th - Apr 2nd

Monday: Today we will discuss sec-7.2, Nonrenewable Energy. Students will learn concepts such as; why coal is a fossil fuel, how petroleum and natural gas are removed from Earth, the process of nuclear fission and nuclear fusion, and how nuclear fission generates electricity. Next students will watch videos on these concepts. Do the section review for homework.

Tuesday: Discussion on sec-7.3, Renewable Energy. Students will learn how geothermal energy may be used as a substitute for fossil fuels, they will learn to compare passive and active methods of harnessing energy from the sun, and how water and wind can be harnessed to generate electricity. Do the section review for homework.

Wednesday: Discussion on sec-7.4, Resources and Conservation. Students will learn about the environmental impacts of mining and the use of fossil fuels, how the environmental impacts of mining can be reduced, and identify various ways that we can conserve natural resources. Next students will watch videos on conservation of resources. Do the section review for homework.
Thursday: Students will work on an inquiry lab - Blowing in the wind. The objective of this lab is to design and build a functional windmill that lifts a specific weight as quickly as possible.
Friday: Students will work on their chapter assessment for part of the class period and then study for the chapter test.
