JA 7A Science Schedule for September 26th - 30th

Monday:Test on ch-2, Rocks: Mineral Mixtures.

Tuesday: Today students will work on “Identifying Rocks” lab. They will use the properties such as; color, texture, grain size, hardness, porosity, etc. They should be able to identify if the rock belongs to igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic group.

Wednesday: We will discuss sec-1, on ch-3; Earth’s Story and Those Who First Listened. Students will learn to compare uniformitarianism and catastrophism, and explain the role of paleontology in the study of Earth’s history. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Thursday: Discussion on sec-2, Relative Dating: Which Came First? Students will learn to explain how relative dating is used in geology, the principle of superposition, how physical features are used to determine relative ages, etc. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Friday: Students will watch videos on Uniformitarianism, Catastrophism, and Relative Dating.

Chemistry Schedule for September 26th - 30th

Monday: Students will work on rules for counting significant figures, and rules for rounding off. Next, they will work on few worksheets to practice their application skills on applying these rules.

Tuesday: Today we will learn the rules for significant figures in multiplication and division calculations, and then in addition and subtraction calculations. Next, they will work on few worksheets to practice their application skills on applying these rules.

Wednesday: Students will work on sec-5.3, Problem solving and unit conversions. We will learn to use dimensional analysis to solve problems, the three temperature scales, to define density and its units, etc. Do the notes for homework.

Thursday: Students will work on worksheets to solve various problems on converting to different temperature scales, solving density problems and other conversions. Next, they will work on sec-5.3 section review.

Friday: Students will work on ch-5 chapter assessment for the first part of the block. Next, they will study for the test, which is on Monday October 3rd.

Physical Science Schedule for September 26th - 30th

Monday: Students will work on sec-5.3, section review for the first part of the block. Next, we will watch videos on Group 1, Group 2, Group 7, and Group 8 elements to see how their reactivity increases as they react with other elements.

Tuesday: Today students will work on ch-5 chapter review for the first part of the block. Next, we will study for the test.

Wednesday: Students will take a test on ch-5.

Thursday: Discussion on sec-6.1, Ionic Bonding. Students will learn to recognize stable electron configurations, predict an element’s chemical properties using valence electrons and electron dot diagrams, and relate the properties of ionic compounds to the structure of crystal lattices. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Friday: Today we will discuss sec-6.2, Covalent Bonding. Students will learn how atoms are held together in a covalent bond, the factors that determine whether a molecule is polar or nonpolar, etc. Do the notes and section review for homework.

JA 7A Science Schedule for September 19th - 23rd

Monday: Since the “Identifying Minerals” lab took longer than it was planned to, we could not finish sec-2 on Friday. Today we will discuss sec-2, Igneous Rock. Students will learn to describe three ways that igneous rock forms, explain how the cooling rate of magma affects the texture of igneous rock, and distinguish between igneous rock that cools within Earth’s crust and igneous rock that cools at Earth’s surface. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Tuesday: Today we will discuss sec-3, Sedimentary Rock. Students will learn to describe the origin of sedimentary rock, describe the three main categories of sedimentary rock, and the three types of sedimentary structures. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Wednesday: Discussion on sec-4, Metamorphic Rock. We will learn to describe the two ways a rock can undergo metamorphism, explain the mineral composition of rock changes as the rocks undergo metamorphism, and describe the difference between foliated and nonfoliated metamorphic rock. Do the notes and review for homework.

Thursday: Today students will work on the chapter review for the first part of the class, and then study for the test, which will be on Monday, Sep 26th.

Friday: Students will watch videos on the rock cycle, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock formations.

Chemistry Schedule for September 19th - 23rd

Monday: Students will work on different activities to be acquainted with Type-I, Type-II, Type-III Binary Compounds and Polyatomic ions. They will work on several worksheets during class.

Tuesday: Students will work on their chapter-4 assessment during class, and later study for the test.

Wednesday: Test on ch-4, Nomenclature.

Thursday: Today we will discuss sec-5.1, Scientific Notation and Units. Students will learn to show how very large or very small numbers can be expressed in scientific notation, use the metric system to measure length, volume, and mass. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Friday: Discussion on sec-5.2, Uncertainty in Measurement and Significant Figures. Students will learn how uncertainty in a measurement arises, to indicate a measurement’s uncertainty by using significant figures, and to determine the number of significant figures in a calculated result. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Physical Science Schedule for September 19th - 23rd

Monday: Due to the delay with “Energy Levels” lab last week, students were not able to work on their chapter review during class. We will work on ch-4 chapter review for part of the class, and then study for the test.

Tuesday: Test on ch-4.

Wednesday: Discussion on sec-5.1, Organizing the Elements. Students will learn to describe how Mendeleev arranged the elements in his table, explain how the predictions Mendeleev made and the discovery of new elements demonstrated the usefulness of his periodic table. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Thursday: Today we will discuss sec-5.2, Modern Periodic Table. We will learn about describing the arrangement of elements in the modern periodic table, explain how atomic mass of an element is determined and how atomic mass units are defined, and identify general properties of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Friday: Discussion on sec-5.3, Representative Groups. Today students will learn to relate the number of valence electrons to groups in the periodic table and to properties of elements in those groups, predict the reactivity of some elements based on their locations within a group, and identify some properties of common A group elements. Do the notes and section review for homework.

JA 7A Science Schedule for Sep 12th - 16th

Monday – We will work on sec-3 section review for part of the class period. Next, students will work on the “Minerals Identification Lab”. Students will do various tests such as; color, luster, streak, hardness, density, etc. to identify the name of the mineral.

Tuesday – Today students will work on the chapter review for the first part of the class. Next, we will study for the test.

Wednesday – Test on ch-1, Minerals of the Earth’s Crust.

Thursday – Discussion on ch-2, sec-1, The Rock Cycle. Students will learn about erosion, deposition, weathering, solidification, compaction, etc. Do the section review for homework.

Friday – We will discuss sec-2, Igneous Rocks. Students will learn about the origins, composition and texture of the igneous rocks. Do the section review for homework.

Academy Chemistry Schedule for Sep 12th - 16th

Monday – Learning the language of chemistry by naming compounds and writing their formulas is fundamental to being successful in chemistry. Today we will discuss Type-II Binary Compounds. Students will learn the rules to name and write the compounds. We will practice several formulas to make sure that students are familiar with the rules.

Tuesday – We will discuss Type – III Binary Compounds. Students will learn the rules for naming type III binary compounds. We will practice to learn the prefixes and suffixes to make the naming of compounds and writing formulas easier. Do the section review for homework.

Wednesday – Today we will learn to name and write formulas for more complex compounds. Students will learn to name common polyatomic ions, names for common acids, how the anion composition determines an acid’s name, etc. Practice the names and formulas of the polyatomic ions for homework.

Thursday – Discussion on naming acids. We will discuss the rules for naming acids, names and formulas of acids that do not contain Oxygen, names of some Oxygen-containing acids, etc. Later, we will work on the section review.

Friday – Students will work on the chapter review during class to study for the test.

Academy Physical Science Schedule for Sep 12th - 16th

Monday – We will go over ch-3 test that students took on Friday for the first part of the period. Next, we will discuss sec-4.1, Studying Atoms. Students will learn about ancient Greek models of matter, list the main points of Dalton’s atomic theory, and explain how Thomson and Rutherford used data from experiments to produce their atomic models. Do the section review for homework.

Tuesday – Today we will discuss sec-4.2, The Structure of an Atom. Students will learn to identify three subatomic particles and compare their properties. They will learn to distinguish the atomic number of an element from the mass number of an isotope, and use these numbers to describe the structure of atoms. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Wednesday – Discussion on sec-4.3, Modern Atomic Theory. Students will learn to describe Bohr’s model of the atom and the evidence for energy levels. They will also learn to explain how the electron cloud model represents the behavior and locations of electrons in atoms. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Thursday – Today students will work on the chapter review during class.

Friday – Students will watch videos related to structure of an atom and the modern atomic theory.

JA 7A Science Schedule for Sep 6th - 9th

Tuesday – Today we will discuss ch-1, Minerals of the Earth’s Crust in Book -2. We will focus on sec-1, What is a Mineral? In this topic, students will learn to describe the structure of minerals, and the two major groups of minerals. They will also learn about elements, compounds, crystals, and silicate and nonsilicate minerals. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Wednesday – Students should turn in their “Three-Dimensional Model” project today. Students will present their models to their peers during the class.

Thursday – Students, who were not able to present their models on Wednesday, will present it today for the first part of the block. Next, we will discuss sec-2, Identifying Minerals. Students will learn the seven ways to determine the identity of minerals, and the special properties of minerals. Do the notes and section review for homework.

Friday – Today we will move on to sec-3, The Formation, Mining, and Use of Minerals. The objectives of this topic are – to describe the environments in which minerals form, compare the two types of mining, describe the different uses for metallic and nonmetallic minerals, and to describe the two ways to reduce the effects of mining. Students should work on their notes and section review for homework.

Academy Chemistry Schedule for Sep 6th - 9th

Tuesday: Students worked on their “Element Mobile” project for the past two weeks. They will be presenting their mobile to their peers during the class. Chapter – 3, section reviews and chapter review are due today.

Wednesday – Test on ch-3, Elements, Atoms, and Ions.

Thursday – Students will learn to name and write the Type I Binary Ionic Compounds. Today we will mainly focus on learning the cations and anions that will be used in naming these ionic compounds. Students will be paired up with partners to work on few activities.

Friday – Today students will work on few handouts to practice how to write a Type I Binary Ionic Compound. They will work on naming and writing various formulas in Binary Ionic Compounds.

Academy Physical Science Schedule for Sep 6th - 9th

Tuesday – Students did research on careers in scientific field. Each student different area and did research that includes information such as; the educational requirements, job description, job growth in the future, salary scale, etc. Students will present their research to their peers during class.

Wednesday – Today we will discuss sec-3.3, Phase Changes. In this sections students will learn to describe phase changes, explain how temperature is used to recognize a phase change, describe each of the six phase changes, and identify phase changes as endothermic or exothermic. Do the section review for homework.

Thursday – To students will work on the chapter review for the first half of the block. Next, we will study for the test.

Friday – Test on Ch-3.
